Simple Ways to Be Green in the New Year

Posted on: January 3rd, 2017 by Showroom on Hubbard No Comments

go-green
2017 has officially arrived, and with a new year comes new resolutions. Although some resolutions tend to fizzle out pretty quickly, there’s one we’re always certain to maintain throughout the entire year: acting in an environmentally friendly manner. If going green has made it to your list of resolutions, you’re in luck! We’ve rounded up some easy ways to be green in 2017. Please see below for the ideas!

Walk or Bike More

Not only will you lower your carbon footprint, but you will also get more exercise and save on gas money. If a vehicle is an absolute requirement, try to carpool or use public transportation.

Ditch Plastic Bags

Going grocery shopping? Make sure to use reusable bags, rather than sticking to plastic. Plastic bags can take 15 to 1000 years to decompose. They aren’t biodegradeable and instead break down into toxic particles through a process known as photo degradation. These toxic particles have a severe impact on the surrounding animal life and the environment as a whole. Learn more reasons why plastic bags should be avoided here.

Use CFL Lightbulbs

According the the Environmental Protection Agency, CFLs not only last ten times longer than incandescent bulbs, but can also save up to 75% more energy.

Use a Dishwasher

Dishwashers use less soap and energy than hand-washing dishes does, and only 1/6 of the water.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

You’ll not only save energy, but you’ll save money, as well! According to Energy Star, you’ll save approximately $180 per year by installing one.

Use Power Strips

Anything that’s plugged into an outlet, be it a charger with nothing attached or an appliance that’s not in use, utilizes energy. Power strips make it simple to stop power without having to unplug anything.

Let Sunlight Light Your Home

It’s free, it can warm up your home, and even makes you feel more alert.
