Committed 2017

In honor of Valentine’s Day, we celebrated love this past weekend by participating in The Green Wedding Alliance’s wedding show, Committed, at The Greenhouse Loft. There were some incredible, eco-conscious wedding and event vendors there, everyone from photographers, musicians and DJs, florists, caterers, and more! We enjoyed getting to meet so many wonderful engaged couples and hear a bit about their upcoming special days. We also raffled off one of our walnut, live edge tables to a lucky pair and filled up on the delicious bite and drink samples! It was definitely a great way to spend a beautiful Sunday.

Vendor Spotlight: Vintage Place Settings

Today, we’re excited to share a behind the scenes look at an exceptional event vendor, Vintage Place Settings. We originally became introduced to founders Stacy Powers and Coreen Arnold through The Green Wedding Alliance, a coalition of eco-friendly event vendors in the Chicago area. We became instantly enamored with both their gorgeous china-filled tablescapes and their green business practices, so we’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on them today!

Vintage Place Settings is a very unique business. Can you tell us a bit about it and how you got started?

Vintage Place Settings was created in 2013 by two women who loved collecting china and other table settings and wanted to share the beauty of different patterns for a custom setting for any event. Over the last few years we have accumulated a very large inventory that includes over 200 different patterns of china.

What services do you offer?

We offer a large selection of china to fit almost any theme, color or style. We also rent gold and silver-plated flatware, clear and colored glassware, depression glass, damask napkins, serving pieces, utensils, and some vintage props. We especially love to set dessert tables with lovely cake stands, compotes, platters, and other serving pieces. We offer short-term rentals, style consultation, set-up, delivery, and pick-up. We gladly coordinate with venues and other vendors. Our items may be rented by the piece, but we also offer discounted package rates for complete table settings. Finally, we also sell some of our pieces and act as a finder for special items that we don’t have in our vast inventory.

Where do you find most of your pieces?

We find them in a variety of places, but mostly at local estate sales.

As a member of The Green Wedding Alliance, sustainability is clearly important to you. How do your incorporate this ideal into your business?

We are very proud that we can repurpose vintage table settings so they do not go into landfills. We also reuse our packing materials. We use earth friendly cleaning and paper products whenever possible in our business and recycle waste products. When we have damaged items, we donate them to several artists so these items have another life as beautiful artwork.

Most memorable event you were a part of?

We have had so many memorable events that it is way too hard for us to choose just one. We love to work with wedding couples to make their weddings beautiful and unique. We start with their vision and give them a variety of choices to fit their dreams. We also love styling vintage tea parties with our vintage teapots, cups and saucers, and serving pieces.

Best part about being in the biz?

The best part of the business is helping people create lovely place settings for their event, whether it is a small dinner party or a large wedding.

Vendor Spotlight: flowers by stem

It’s time to highlight another one of our wonderfully talented vendor partners! Last time we spoke with Nicole Hensley from Storybook Weddings and Events. Today, we’re taking a peak inside the inspiring florist, flowers by stem, and their breathtakingly beautiful designs with their owner Stephanie Stopka. Enjoy!

Tell us a bit about the history of flowers By stem. How you get involved in the floral business? Why did you decide to start your own company?

After a chance job working for the top florist in Charleston, South Carolina (shout out to Tiger Lily!), I left my career in advertising to attend floral design school. I founded flowers by stem in 2006 with the belief that the key to beautiful design is a personalized approach. To this day, I attend to every design detail, from initial consultation to final set-up. I’m continuously inspired by the city of Chicago, and I reside here with my husband and three beautiful flower girls.

What services do you offer?

flowers by stem is as a full-service floral design firm for weddings and events in and around the Chicago area. We love creating innovative, one-of-a-kind experiences through our flowers and draw closely from our clients’ inspirations.

Any quick tips on choosing the right flowers for your event?

Spend a bit of time on Pinterest and wedding blogs to get a sense of the design aesthetic you are drawn to. Note the shapes/colors of flowers you like best. Then meet with a floral designers, who can help translate that vision in the best way, adjusting to seasonal flower availability, color palette and budget realities.

Are there any favorite new floral trends that you’ve noticed?

Greens in everything! Today’s couples are looking for a more relaxed yet romantic aesthetic for their big day, and using a variety of delicate, textural greens in tandem with seasonal flowers gives that look.

I know you’re a member of the Green Wedding Alliance. Why is sustainability important to you, and how do you incorporate that ideal into your business?

I grew up camping and fishing with my family and bring that childhood love for nature to all of my designs. I am committed to an eco-friendly approach to floral design and sit on the board of the Green Wedding Alliance, a local organization of environmentally conscious wedding vendors. Our sustainable approach to floral design is realized in a variety of ways, including:

-Focusing on local, in-season flowers during the Midwest growing season
-Working directly with local sustainable flower farmers
-Recycling and composting waste
-Communicating all invoices electronically
-Passing it on – we love to coordinate flower donations after events. Many of our flowers enjoy a second life at nursing homes and hospitals around the city.

The best part of this business is creating beautiful moments that celebrate some of life’s biggest events – it’s an honor we cherish!

Today, we’re pleased to be shining a spotlight on one of our most dedicated vendor partners, Storybook Weddings and Events! With their passion for planning, attention to detail, and willingness to take on any challenge that comes their way, Storybook is the place to turn to in order to truly cherish not only your wedding day, but also the days leading up to it. Plus, they’re fresh off a rebranding process, and we simply adore their new look! We had the opportunity to speak with Nicole Hensley, the founder and lead planner at Storybook, to learn a bit more about the company and to get some great insight and advice for planning a wedding. Hope you enjoy!

Tell us a bit about the history of Storybook

I found my love for wedding planning while working at a top catering company in Chicago. Being a catering manager allowed me to work with a couple on a pretty important part of their planning process. The food! During the course of my time with each couple, we would build great relationships, and it made me realize that I wanted to know more about the couple, more about their wedding, and only being involved in catering was just a portion of this exciting journey for them.

Becoming a wedding planner was a no-brainer. Who wouldn’t want to design and create beautiful weddings alongside their couples? However, aside from the pretty-ness of the job, weddings can harbor a lot of stress, logistics, and detailed preparation. And I LOVE a good challenge! Being able to take over the stresses and not-so-fun parts of the wedding planning so that my couples can truly enjoy their engagement journey is what I love most about what I do.

Who else is on your team, and how did you start working together?

I have two AMAZING wedding planners who work alongside me at Storybook. Our story is quite funny but it is also a good ‘hour and a half long story’ if you are up for a glass of wine to hear about it. *smiles!*

Lindsay Gaeta and Lisa Jaroscak joined the team a couple months after Storybook was founded. It was important to me that I had passionate, honest, and creative planners working for my boutique business. They love to go the extra mile and make sure that the ultimate goal is to create the wedding that our couples envisioned and allow them to enjoy their engagement journey and wedding day. I couldn’t imagine Storybook without them.

What services does Storybook offer?

At Storybook we believe that our couples’ engagement journey is for them to spend more time cherishing the beautiful memories that they will create rather than work through their exciting time. We offer a variety of packages that include full service and partial planning, design, and wedding coordination.

What’s your favorite moment that occurs during a wedding?

My favorite part of the wedding day is having the chance to listen to the couples recite their vows to one another. As wedding planners, our day is filled with moving from one task to the next, overseeing vendors, keeping track of the timeline, answering guest questions, and perfecting the details. During the vow exchanges, everything becomes quiet, time slows down, smiles and happy tears make their way to our faces, and the guests listen to the most important part of the wedding. It’s the reason why we are all there in the first place.

Best advice for a bride and groom planning a wedding?

Don’t stress! Everything is going to work out in the end. Whether you are nervous about sticking to your budget, if the flowers you have dreamt of are in season, or if the rain will stay away on the big day, remember what you are planning this wedding for! It is all about you and your future wife or hubby. Remember what is important and let go of the little things.


Any favorite new wedding trends that you’ve noticed?

My favorite new wedding trends are this seasons colors! I am a lover of soft color pallets and seeing more dusty blues, soft blushes, and bright ivories make my heart sing!!!

I also love the loose bouquet trend. It makes me imagine that the bride picked the flowers herself from a garden creating a lovely natural looking bouquet.

Best moment of being in the biz, thus far?

One of my favorite moments was when we were going through our rebrand. Looking at what Storybook Weddings & Events has become from where we were just a short time ago was such a rewarding moment. As I uploaded our couples’ stories and photos to our website, I was able to reflect, and it brought me a sense of humbleness to have been a part of such a defining moment in the lives of each couple. We can’t wait to continue to build new memories with all of our current and future couples!
